I know we ALL know it, but straights against curves is always thrown into the ears of my students constantly. I can't emphasize it enough! I believe it's one of the cornerstones of art and design. In my small example here I took one of my sketches from my class and drew over it with various lil' examples of where this applies.
To say straights against curves may only conjure up one design to the theory. But if we say straight "AND" curves it may open up our mind to more variation.
Let it be a psychological "click" in your mind! Straights "AND" Curves!

WOW!!! What a post! A very insightful way of looking at straights against curves...and the very straightforward image helps unbelievably! The couch, the hair, the feet...Of course! So many opportunities! Thanks for posting!!!
An excellent way of looking at it! Thanks a million for sharing, a light has just gone on in my head! :D
you should change your book to an ebook, so you can keep updating it.. like this post...
Lovely sketch and insightful post! I really love the breakdown of the drawing.
awesome Dave. thanks for posting this!
Cool Beans :-) Being able to control stuff like this really shows up when animating or designing characters. It great to continue showing it directly.
I always appreciate your draw-over posts, Dave!
Nice work!
Hey Dave Zach Shore here again, cool post about straights and curves, I wanted to leave you a comment asking about another aspect of life drawing and something I am having trouble with and maybe you could help. I am trying to work on my life drawing skills right now and a big problom I am having is getting the many pieces of the body to "connect" in proper proportions, masses, etc etc. example, occasionally I will draw a torso when I begin the figure, and the drawing will be going smoothly and I will be rather impressed with my work, when I add the neck and the head, the head comes out too big or too small, or the neck is too long or too short OR a variation of the two at the same time. And this happens with other parts of the body too sometimes, what can I do to improve my skills?

I think the best thing to do is sketch the whole body all in one. Don't just do a torsoe, then a head, then an arm, then a leg etc...
sketch the beginning lines of the whole sketch as one big shape the encompasses the complete form not just parts that you have to puzzle together. hope that helps.
I found my new idol. You are truly a genius!
